I'm currently a Senior Motion Designer on the marketing team at GEICO. I am responsible for everyting from in-stadium graphics for professional sports teams, to landing pages for various GEICO business lines. My work also includes social media animations, as well as banner ads, ensuring consistency and creativity across multiple platforms.

Social Animations

This animation was created for a social media post, inspired by a previously used illustrated character that I thought was neat. While I only had the character’s head to start with, I illustrated the car, arms, hands, and light bulb to bring the scene to life. The process was a lot fo fun, and allowed me to expand on an established style while crafting a nice animation.

SPORTS AT GEICO

This collection of projects involved managing a wide range of deliverables across various sports and media platforms, making it an ongoing, year-round effort to keep up with the evolving demands of each sports season. Deliverables included LED ribbons and scoreboard assets displayed during games, a commercial that aired on TV during March Madness that reached millions of viewers, banner ads brought to life using scripts and cutting-edge technology, and everything in between. Scroll down to see a few of these animation projects.

Arc Tunnels

The 'arcs' in GEICO's brand guidelines refer to rectangles with rounded corners. We'd been using the arcs as transitions in 2D animations for a while. We thought it would be cool to use them in 3D to convey very fast motion. It's a classic animation technique to show speed – shapes wizzing by. Real motion nerds might say animating in the 4th dimension. But we had a cool way to animate it in 3D. We set up a tunnel, or hallway, of planes in cinema 4D, and then slid a camera down the 'hall' achieving this effect.

Storyboard and Styleframes

These are some of the styleframes from the beggining of the animation. I drew a lot of inspiration from Conor Henkle - a very talented sports animator. I created these designs that utilized the GEICO elements. Glitchy text, stacking logos, big bold designs, these are all common techniques in the 'sports animation' language.

Puck smashing through wall

This was a fairly simple animation to set up in Cinema 4D. It's just a veroni fracture on a wall, or cube. And then a simulation of an invisible sphere breaking through the wall. It was a fun idea – half the people were like 'You want to smash a puck through a wall?' and the other half were like 'Yea! Let's do it!'. It's actually a common animation on ESPN, for example, or just any sports animation – a football smashing through a wall. Who would have thunk it!

Animating the puck

LEFT COLUMN: You can see in the left column, how we used a rotating puck in cinema 4D, then just added it to the breaking wall in After Effects. You can see how we rotated the camera to achieve the 'Matrix' effect MIDDLE COLUMN: The gecko animation was provided by Frame Store - they animate the gecko. But for the continuity of the full animation, we added a puck bouncing in. That's the red bouncing shape. That was just simply done in After Effects. You can see the y position motion curves, how it bounces, in the lower middle column. It was simple but fun. THE RIGHT COLUMN: shows the gecko hitting the puck. The animation provided by the Frame Store has the gecko hitting the puck off to the right, we added a 3D puck zooming at you at a high speed. This is the top right animation

Ribbon LEDs

This is a ribbon LED in Caps stadium. We create these LEDs across many professional sports leagues - NFL, NHL, MLB, NCAA, etc. I also write scripts to automate the production. To create the flame we used trapcode particular.

3D Animation

For each sport, I typically create a 3D model of the relevant sports equipment (e.g., football, baseball, etc.) in Cinema 4D. These props are then incorporated into LED displays and scoreboard assets

Landing Pages

GEICO recently underwent a brand redesign, which prompted a refresh of their landing pages. These pages receive 50,000 visitors per month, serving as key touchpoints for users seeking quotes across various lines of business. In addition to designing each page, I also led the collaboration with developers to bring the product pages to life. The project was a valuable learning experience for the entire team, resulting in a successful and impactful update.
